Cost-Effective Athena Partition Management: Beyond Glue Crawlers

Beyond Glue Crawlers
Amazon Athena is a powerful serverless query engine, but managing partitions efficiently can be challenging and expensive. Many teams default to using AWS Glue Crawlers for partition management, but this approach can quickly become costly at scale.
The Cost Problem
Glue Crawlers charge based on the Data Processing Units (DPUs) consumed during a crawl. For large datasets with frequent updates, these costs can add up significantly. We found that our monthly Glue Crawler costs were exceeding our actual Athena query costs.
Alternative Approaches
There are several cost-effective alternatives: using ALTER TABLE ADD PARTITION statements directly, leveraging partition projection, or implementing a custom Lambda function that adds partitions based on S3 events. Each approach has its trade-offs, and the best choice depends on your specific data patterns.
